Last week, I had my research speech. It went a little differently than I had hoped, because I got nervous and didn’t explain some parts of the research which I had wanted to elaborate on. I also went over time, more than I had planned. In the future for my speeches, I would like to prepare more for my speeches by practicing them beforehand, and using a timer each time I practice. I only timed myself once when I practiced, and I finished in time. However, if I had practiced more while timing myself, I feel that I could have done a little better. That being said, I am still happy that I presented my research in ISM so far to my peers. I also had my first in person interview last week with a professor, and it went very well. I had the chance to discuss her day to day work life, her research, and what she does outside of her work hours. One thing that I thought was interesting was the professor said that she did not know that she would become a biophysics professor, but she became interested in statistics and math and did those topics as her undergraduate major, and after she learned about biophysics, she decided that she wanted to pursue that as a career. This showed me that plans can change and it is okay to want to have a different career that you originally intended. I still want to go on the pre-med track in college and eventually attend medical school, but I am also thinking about getting a minor in data science. Overall, last week was really nice and although it was busy, it was good. This week, I will be continuing to listen to my peers’ research speech presentations and I will also be working on the ISM research showcase invitations. See you next week!
